In this month’s Caregiver Talk, local expert Brett Hodges, owner of HomeWorx, joined us to discuss the importance of preventative maintenance for aging in place. He shared his company’s mission to help local homeowners through comprehensive home maintenance services. These services also help older adults who own their homes maintain their independence.
He covered various aspects of preventative maintance as well as home modifications and safety improvements, including lighting, flooring, bathroom modifications, and safety systems, while emphasizing the importance of proper installation and regular maintenance.
Brett also shared his expertise on home maintenance scheduling and addressed common challenges faced by older homeowners.

Local Options and Resources for Home Modifications and Minor Repairs

- The CAPABLE Program at NKC Health is a 5-month program that provides one-on-one care for Clay County older adults age 60+ who have some difficulty with daily activities. The support team includes a registered nurse, occupational therapist, and home repair technician. For more information, contact 816-691-5394.
- The Safe at Home program through Rebuilding Together provides no-cost preventive home modifications to people with mobility issues and other disabilities to improve accessibility, reduce falls, increase independence and facilitate aging-in place. Safe at Home is designed to improve aging-in-place outcomes for older adults through the modification of their home environment to meet their specific needs.

- County or municipal programs can help with weatherization, minor home repairs, accessibility modifications (ie: Johnson County Housing Services, Lenexa Minor Home Repair Grant)
