On January 31, 2026, Sandwiched KC hosted our inaugural Caregiver Closet community swap, and we are still feeling incredibly grateful for how it all came together. Despite the cold winter weather, caregivers, community members, and volunteers showed up in force to give, receive, and support one another in ways that truly reflect the heart of our mission.
Caregivers and families generously donated care supplies they no longer needed, making space for others who could use them right now. At the same time, people came seeking items that can be difficult or expensive to access when you’re in the thick of caregiving. Watching those connections happen in real time was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a community shares its resources.
Thanks to this collective effort, we were able to gather several wheelchairs, walkers, commodes, and raised toilet seats, along with a mountain of briefs. We also received a wide range of wound care supplies, daily care tools, and hygiene items that can make a real difference in day-to-day caregiving. Most importantly, many of these items will go directly into the hands of caregivers who need them.
We are deeply thankful for the volunteers who helped unload, sort, organize, and keep everything running smoothly throughout the day. We’re also grateful to our partner Re.Use.Full for supporting our very first Caregiver Closet swap and helping make it possible, and to Immanuel Lutheran Church for welcoming us into their space and hosting the event.
Because of the generosity of our community, we were fortunate to share the majority of the donated items with organizations that will continue to get them to caregivers, families, and individuals in need across the region. A heartfelt thank you to the KC Shepherd’s Center, Northland Shepherd’s Center, Sidney and Mike’s Angels, and the Medical Closet at First Church Lawrence for helping extend the impact of this event beyond a single day.
This was our first Caregiver Closet, but it certainly won’t be our last. If you’d like to stay in the loop about future swaps, caregiver support opportunities, and upcoming events, follow us on social media or sign up for our email list.
Together, we’re creating practical support—and shared wisdom—for family caregivers across our community.
