Somewhere in Kansas City this morning, someone set an alarm a little earlier than they needed to. They sorted a week of medications into small plastic compartments. They made a phone call to a pharmacy, then a doctor’s office, then a supervisor to explain why they would be late again. They smiled when their loved one woke up, and they meant it.

No one saw it. No one will thank them for it today. And tomorrow, they will do it again.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, and at Sandwiched KC, we want to begin by simply saying this: we see you. The work you do is sacred. It is quiet, constant, and often invisible, and it holds families and communities together in ways that are impossible to measure.

What it means to be sandwiched

We chose our name for a reason. Anyone helping a loved one is sandwiched, no matter what sits on either side of them. For some, it is aging parents on one side and growing children on the other. For others, it is a full-time job and a spouse who needs more support each month. For many, it is their own health, their own grief, and their own dreams, pressed tight against the needs of someone they love.

Whatever surrounds you, you are the one in the middle. You are the one holding it all together.

That holding comes at a cost. Family caregivers give up sleep, savings, careers, friendships, and time they will never get back. They carry worry into every room. They make decisions no one prepared them to make. And most of them would tell you, without hesitation, that they would do it all again. That is not a small thing. That is love made visible through sacrifice, repeated every single day.

Care Connects Us

This year’s National Family Caregivers Month theme, chosen by Caregiver Action Network, is Care Connects Us. It is a theme that speaks to the heart of everything we do.

Caregiving can be profoundly isolating. It can feel like you are the only one who has ever stood in a hospital hallway at 2 a.m., or cried in the car before walking into a care conference, or wondered whether you are doing any of it right. But you are not the only one. Care connects you to thousands of others across our region who understand exactly what you carry.

Care connects us to the people we are helping, in moments of tenderness that no one else gets to see. It connects us to one another, in support groups where a stranger becomes a lifeline in a single conversation. And it connects us to a community that is learning, slowly, to hold up those who hold everything else.

Introducing the 2026 Kansas City Caregiver Resource Guide

One of the hardest parts of being a family caregiver is not knowing where to turn. Too often, families spend hours they do not have searching for help that should be easy to find.

That is why we are honored to share the 2026 Kansas City Caregiver Resource Guide. This updated guide gathers trusted local resources for family caregivers across the Kansas City metro in one place, so the next step feels a little less overwhelming. Inside, you will find [list 3 to 4 key sections, for example: respite options, in-home support, legal and financial planning, and support groups].

This guide exists because of something deeply personal. Every edition opens with a note from our founder, Rachel, alongside a photo of her with her grandma, a reminder of the love that started this work. Each page was assembled with one hope: that a family caregiver who opens it will feel a little less alone.

How you can honor family caregivers this month

If you are a family caregiver, please take one thing from this month: you deserve support, too. Open the guide. Join one of our support groups. Reach out to us for one-on-one navigation. You do not have to hold it all together by yourself.

If you know a family caregiver, this is your invitation to reach toward them. Share the guide. Offer a specific kind of help, like a meal, a ride, or an afternoon of rest. Ask how they are doing, and then listen.

And if you want to learn alongside others, join us on Saturday, November 7 for the Heartland Caregiving Conference at NKC Health. Find out more and register here.

To every family caregiver in Kansas City: thank you. For the early mornings and the long nights. For the patience you find when you thought you had none left. For the care you give without being asked. You are holding it all together, and this month, we are holding you up.

Because care connects us.

With deep gratitude,
Sandwiched KC
