{"id":1922,"date":"2019-07-09T15:59:07","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T20:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rachelh16.sg-host.com\/?p=1922"},"modified":"2019-10-26T21:19:40","modified_gmt":"2019-10-27T02:19:40","slug":"why-were-not-crazy-about-the-phrase-sandwich-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandwichedkc.com\/es\/why-were-not-crazy-about-the-phrase-sandwich-generation\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We&#8217;re Not Crazy about the Phrase &#8220;Sandwich Generation&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSandwich(ed) generation\u201d is a phrase that\u2019s commonly used to describe family caregivers who are stuck in the middle, caring for their children as well as their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re here to tell you this label is unfair and divisive. When people in the media and aging sectors use it, it breaks our hearts a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[su_dropcap style=&#8221;default&#8221; size=&#8221;3&#8243; class=&#8221;&#8221;]1[\/su_dropcap] Terms like these create an unnecessary divide between family caregivers. Instead of categorizing ourselves into groups, we should be uniting collectively to elevate our visibility as a major source of power and energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caregivers are divided enough already. We have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>people caring for their elderly family members.&nbsp;<\/li><li>people caring for their family members with disabilities (and there are all kinds of iterations of family caregiving within this group, as well, from life stage of the person a disability to the type of disability to age to the relation of the caregiver). and<\/li><li>people caring for military veterans&#8230;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Just to name a few.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[su_dropcap style=&#8221;default&#8221; size=&#8221;3&#8243; class=&#8221;&#8221;]2[\/su_dropcap]   Just because a person isn\u2019t balancing caregiving with parenting, doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re not sandwiched.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They could be sandwiched between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>building a career and helping an adult sibling with intellectual disabilities&nbsp;<\/li><li>running a small business and caring for a parent or grandparent&nbsp;<\/li><li>managing their own disability while meeting the support needs of a parent&nbsp;<\/li><li>holding onto their job and sanity while caring for two or more family members&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While caregiving, we are all balancing multiple roles while meeting life\u2019s challenges and everyday demands. <strong><em>All versions of caregiving are hard.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we focus our messaging only on \u201csandwiched family caregivers,\u201d we are diminishing the hardships (and triumphs) of caregivers who don\u2019t have children, but have a plate that\u2019s just as full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sandwiched caregivers come from all walks of life. We belong to every demographic. All racial and religious groups, all income levels, and all zip codes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we all share is a need for a common language so we can find information and support to help us navigate our journeys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re fighting back against the accepted definition of &#8220;sandwiched family caregivers.&#8221;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want to validate and honor every single caregiver&#8217;s unique experience.  It doesn&#8217;t matter if you are a single mom raising a young child while coordinating your aunt&#8217;s care in the memory care facility or you just took a job as an executive director and your dad just got a dementia diagnosis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all have our sandwiches.
